This one is based on the story of Rahab — a woman in Jericho who hid two enemy spies in her home, lying to the soldiers sent to find them, risking her life for people she’d just met. She wasn’t someone her community would have called good or important. She was written off. And God gave her a place in something much bigger anyway.

I painted this not long after leaving a job where I’d been made to feel like something was wrong with me for not fitting the mold. Every time I’ve been pushed aside, He’s turned it into something better. That’s what I see in her.

The warm colors and the copper leafing behind her are there to give her an air of strength. The lines and movement in the background and her garment are the chaos she was actually living in — hiding spies, lying to soldiers, risking everything — but none of it shows in her composure. She’s steady. Unshaken. That contrast is the whole painting to me.
